What Is a Packing Slip?

A packing slip is a fulfillment document packed with a shipment. It tells the person opening the box what should be inside: who sent it, who should receive it, and which items and quantities were packed.

Warehouse and receiving teams use it to check the order without treating it as a bill. It is generally not a request for payment. An invoice is the document that shows what is owed.

Use the generator above to fill in the form, review the live preview, and download a PDF. Treat this as a practical description, not legal advice. Packing slips are common in order fulfillment, but they are not required in every industry or country.

Create a Packing Slip

  1. Enter the packing slip number and packing date. Add an order or PO number if you have one.
  2. Add shipper and recipient names and addresses, with phone or email if useful.
  3. List each item with a description and quantity. SKU and unit are optional.
  4. Add carrier, tracking, or other shipping details only when they help identify the shipment.
  5. Review the live packing slip preview.
  6. Generate and download the PDF. No account is required.

What to Include in a Packing Slip

Use this as a practical checklist of what this generator supports, not as a legal minimum.

Common fields — packing slip number, packing date, shipper, recipient, item description, and quantity. These are the details most receiving teams need to match the box to the order.

Optional fields — order number, PO number, ship-to address when delivery is not to the recipient, SKU, unit, carrier, tracking number, shipping method, weight, package count, notes, packed by, received by, logo, and signature.

If you are issuing a purchase order rather than packing goods, use the purchase order generator. For a priced export document, use the commercial invoice generator.

Packing Slip Example

The sample below uses the same packing slip layout as the live preview. It is a fictional shipment from Northstar Home Goods in Denver to Maya Chen in Austin. It is not a real customer document, and it does not include prices.

Read the sample from top to bottom:

  • Packing slip number — PS-48219, packed on 15 September 2026.
  • Order and PO — ORD-48219 and PO-73104.
  • Shipper and recipient — Northstar Home Goods in Denver; Maya Chen in Austin. Ship To matches the recipient.
  • Shipping details — UPS Ground, tracking 1Z999AA10123456784, 18 lb, two packages.
  • Items — two ceramic storage sets, four packs of kitchen towels, and one set of glass food containers. Quantities only; no rates or amounts.

Packing Slip vs Invoice

A packing slip communicates what is being shipped. An invoice communicates what is owed. Do not present a packing slip as a financial document. This page has no currency, tax, discount, or total.

Packing Slip vs Delivery Note

The two names often overlap. In many warehouses a packing slip is the contents list that travels with the goods. A delivery note may be the same list, or it may be a separate sheet used to confirm that the delivery arrived.

There is no single worldwide definition. Some teams print one document and call it either a packing slip or a delivery note. Others keep them separate. If your customer asks for a delivery note, check whether they need a contents list, a signature on receipt, or both. This page creates a packing slip, not a separate delivery-note workflow.

How to Create a Packing Slip

  1. Confirm the order and the items that are actually going in the box.
  2. Enter shipper and recipient details. Use Ship To only if delivery is to a different address.
  3. Add each SKU or description with the packed quantity. Skip prices.
  4. Include carrier and tracking information when the shipment already has a label.
  5. Add handling notes if the carton is fragile or needs a signature.
  6. Check the preview against the physical contents, then download the PDF.

Packing Slip Template

A useful packing slip template has a clear title, document number and date, shipper and recipient blocks, an item table with SKU, description, quantity, and unit, and space for shipping notes. Logo and signature are optional branding, not payment fields.

The form above is a fillable packing slip template: you customize the details, preview the document live, and download a PDF. You do not need a separate blank Word or Excel file.

Download a Packing Slip as a PDF

Review the preview, then choose Generate Packing Slip. You can open the PDF in the success dialog and download it without creating an account. Email sharing is available from that dialog. This page does not save the file to the invoice dashboard, and the PDF is a practical packing document rather than a certified legal form.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a packing slip?

A packing slip is a fulfillment document that lists what is being packed and shipped. It typically names the shipper and recipient and itemizes SKUs, descriptions, and quantities so the receiving team can check the contents against the order.

What is the difference between a packing slip and an invoice?

A packing slip communicates what is in the shipment. An invoice communicates what is owed. This packing slip does not include prices, tax, or a total. Use the invoice generator when you need a bill.

What should a packing slip include?

A typical packing slip includes a packing slip number, packing date, shipper, recipient, and line items with description and quantity. Optional fields include SKU, unit, order and PO numbers, a different ship-to address, carrier and tracking details, notes, and packed-by or received-by names.

Can I include a tracking number on a packing slip?

Yes. Carrier, tracking number, shipping method, weight, and package count are optional fields. Add them when they help the recipient or warehouse identify the shipment.

Can I create a packing slip as a PDF?

Yes. Review the live preview, then choose Generate Packing Slip. You can download the PDF without creating an account.

Is this packing slip generator free?

Yes. This page is a free packing slip generator. Fill in the form, review the live preview, and download a PDF. No account is required.

Do I need an account to create a packing slip?

No. You can create and download a packing slip PDF on this page without signing up. This page does not save the document to the invoice dashboard.

Is a packing slip the same as a delivery note?

Some businesses use packing slip and delivery note interchangeably. Others treat a delivery note as a proof-of-delivery document and a packing slip as the contents list inside the box. Usage is not standardized everywhere, so match the wording your customer expects.

Does a packing slip include prices?

Not on this page. Items are listed with SKU, description, quantity, and unit only. There is no rate, amount, subtotal, tax, or total. If you need a priced document, use an invoice, quote, estimate, or proforma invoice instead.

Can I customize the packing slip?

Yes. You can edit shipper and recipient details, items, optional shipping fields, notes, and packed-by or received-by names. You can also add a logo and signature. The live preview updates as you type.
